Maintaining Indoor Air Quality with Pets

indoor air quality with pets

Maintaining good indoor air quality with pets can be a struggle.

We all love our pets!  We love them so much that they become one of the family, and sometimes we even treat them like our own children (guilty). The one down side to our furry friends? Their fur! I know just how much a dog can shed. My home can be dusted and spotless one day, and the very next, my home will be covered with pet hair again! Which brings me to my first tip to maintaining indoor air quality with pets in the home:

Groom and bathe pets regularly.

Although it can be a tedious job to groom and bathe your furry friends on the regular, your filters will thank you! With frequent grooming, and a few de-shedding sessions per week, your home should feel a little less hairy. Not to mention, your filters won’t clog as quickly as they have in the past. You may be thinking, “I have a dog who doesn’t shed, so this whole bathing regularly thing doesn’t apply to me.” That would be incorrect. Shedding and non-shedding pets still have the same capability of bringing in allergens like pollen, mold spores, and dust inside of the home. Bathing your pets on a regular basis will significantly reduce allergens and germs inside of your home.

Change your air filters often.

I know that this tip may seem obvious, but I also know that this simple tip gets forgotten about. Personally, if I don’t set a reminder on my phone, I will forget to change the filters. Implementing this tip will greatly improve your home’s air quality, and will tremendously decrease the amount of pesky allergens floating around in the home as well! Just set that little reminder on your phone anywhere from every 20 to 60 days, and simply change it out. (Rule of thumb: If you have ONE pet, change your filter every 2 months. If you have MORE than one pet, change it anywhere between 20 and 45 days.) We can also make changing out your filters even easier! Check out FilterFetch! Detox the air with an air purifier.

Did you know that according to the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency), indoor air pollution is often five times worse than outdoor air pollution? Yikes! Unfortunately, our pets bring in various harmful particles on their fur, making it difficult to keep your clean and purified. An indoor air purifier can dramatically decrease the amount of harmful particles that enter into your home. Not only does it control odors that come from your pets, but it also reduces harmful contaminants brought in! It’s the best of both worlds – cleaner air and no more smelly odors! When you spend so much time at home with your family and pets, shouldn’t your indoor air quality be at its best?

Just because we own pets doesn’t mean that we have to give up on indoor air quality, or have to endure those smelly odors! I hope I’ve given you a new perspective on indoor air quality, and explained why cleaner air in the home is extremely important. Clean indoor air = better health, better home comfort, and a better living environment overall! Thank you for reading our HVAC tips and tricks for better indoor air quality… Until next blog!
